Black Krim Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Black Krim')
Originally from the Crimean Peninsula of Ukraine, Black Krim is a treasured heirloom tomato known for its deep, rich flavor and striking color. This indeterminate variety produces medium to large beefsteak-style fruits that ripen to a dusky purple-red with dark green shoulders—sometimes appearing almost black in certain lighting. The flavor is famously bold: smoky, sweet, and slightly salty, making it a standout in salads, sandwiches, or sliced fresh with just a dash of salt.
Black Krim plants are vigorous growers that can reach 5–6 feet tall and require staking or caging for support. They perform best with full sun and consistent moisture and will continue producing fruit throughout the season. Because of their thin skin and juiciness, the fruits are best enjoyed fresh and do not store for long, but they more than make up for it with unparalleled taste.
Yellow Brandywine Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Yellow Brandywine')
Yellow Brandywine is a golden-hued heirloom prized for both its beauty and exceptional flavor. Thought to have originated in the late 19th century, this variety bears large, flattened fruits that can weigh over a pound. The skin is smooth and yellow with a soft blush of pink at the blossom end, and the flesh is meaty, low in acidity, and remarkably sweet—perfect for slicing, caprese salads, or showcasing in fresh dishes where its flavor can shine.
The plant is indeterminate and slower to mature than some varieties, but it rewards patient growers with large yields of truly gourmet tomatoes. Growing to 5–6 feet tall, it needs strong staking and regular pruning for optimal air circulation and fruit production. While not ideal for canning due to its low acidity, the Yellow Brandywine is a showstopper in the garden and at the table.
