Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa)

Wild Bergamot, also known as bee balm, is a hardy, aromatic perennial native to much of North America. A member of the mint family, this pollinator favorite produces clusters of soft lavender-pink flowers with a tousled, wild look, blooming mid to late summer. Its fragrant leaves and blossoms have long been used in herbal teas and traditional medicine, and its strong, spicy-minty scent adds sensory richness to any garden.

The plant typically grows 2–4 feet tall with a branching habit and spreads gently by rhizomes, forming colonies over time. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soil, showing excellent drought tolerance once established. Wild Bergamot is beloved by bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making it a powerhouse for pollinator gardens, meadows, and naturalized plantings. In ecological and permaculture landscapes, it offers beauty, resilience, and ecological benefit in equal measure.
